Ashes Gets a World Name and a Composer

On day 3 of PAX West, Ashes of Creation had their scheduled panel presentation "Making MMOs Great Again". The panel was very well attended and the audience was hugely excited to meet the team and hear their perspective on the governing philosophy of the game. Be sure to watch the panel if you didn't get a chance to view it live.

During the panel there were three particularly noteworthy announcements.

Alpha Zero Date - December 15, 2017

Steven and the team confirmed that Alpha 0 (invite only) testing will begin later this calendar year on December 15, 2017. This was already announced in the pre-PAX game overview video released last Thursday, but it was great to see the team confirm that date in public and communicate enthusiasm for the lucky invitees who will comprise the first wave of testers to start experiencing the game and providing Intrepid with valuable player feedback.

Composer Announcement - Bear McCreary

The second major piece of news from the Ashes panel was the announcement that Bear McCreary has signed on to the Intrepid team to compose the score for Ashes of Creation. I am, personally, hugely excited about this. I've been a Bear McCreary fan since Battlestar Galactica where he was responsible for a haunting and diverse score that established a fantastic undertone for the space opera depicted in that series. McCreary has composed scores for a number of notable TV series over the past decade and is certainly one of the most talented composers working in this medium. McCreary also has some experience with video game composition, he is currently working on the soundtrack for the upcoming God of War (2018) game. Here is an example of his work on that game. I leave you with my own personal Bear McCreary favorite, a rich multi-layered piece for strings from Battlestar Galactica season 2.

Ashes World Name - Verra

In an unexpected revelation, Steven (who has been notoriously tight-lipped regarding Ashes lore) answered an audience question (via the Discord community) regarding the official world name, and that name is Verra.

The name evokes some similarity to "terra" (Earth in Latin) as well as "vera" (Latin meaning truth or Slavic meaning faith) . Whether Intrepid drew inspiration from these or other themes is not confirmed, but a hybrid of the concepts for truth, faith, and earth forms a sensible basis for a world name.

Exciting announcements from PAX, indeed, please share your thoughts in the comment section and let us know how you feel about the Alpha date, the composer, or the name "Verra" for the Ashes world. Stay tuned for more post-PAX coverage, both myself and @Isarii will be writing in-depth reviews based on our hands-on experiences with the game.

The composer announcement should draw some eyes, though I'll wait and see how it goes.  MMOs and soundtracks have had a middling record at best given the repetitive nature of these games.  As for the world name?  Meh, we all knew it was going to have a name.

Even though I am a Jeremy Soule fanboy I do like the composer they have.  Kind of surprised but glad we finally know the world name.

Great catch indeed @Valergain .  I love Firefly!

A pretty high-tier composer. Not Jeremy-Soule-tier (Elder Scrolls & Dungeon Siege) but definitely up there.

Apparently, this is the guy that did the opening theme for Black Sails. So he can do no wrong in my eyes.

So I actually talked with Steven about this for awhile this morning, because I have such a big problem with how unmemorable so many soundtracks have been recently, even in film.

We talked about it for awhile - I think he even convinced me to watch Battlestar Galactica finally - and I like the answer. He said he really wants there to be a title score that's not just background music, one that's iconic and instantly recognizable, with different themes and leitmotifs that are incorporated from unique racial themes in other parts of the game.

I'm hoping we'll end up with something as awesome as his vision for it.

I think it will be really interesting to see how McCreary composes the various musical motifs which will associate with different zones and races. With most MMOs I disable in-game music and just run my own playlist, but I'd definitely prefer to have a memorable in-game score to experience.

Unlike most gamers, I usually will turn up the in game music and just immerse myself in it while doing some exploring. I can not wait for this OST.

Love the composer! He made BST (Battle Star Galactica) for me, such good music, intense and gripping.

    Bear seems hilarious, as well.

I'm hoping for tons of bagpipes in Ashes.
